The advent of aviation in the first decade of the 20th Century soon developed into military aviation and the rapid development of air arms. Slow, inefficient aircraft, initially used for reconnaissance, soon took on more offensive role as fighters and bombers. For British Military Aviation the Royal Flying Corps, formed in May 1912, became an important part of overall military capability. In April 1918 it became independent of Army control with the formation of the Royal Air Force.
A number of Commonwealth countries underwent similar development, with the eventual formation of a number of Air Forces, the ones shown below are the ones that were granted badges by the Chester Herald.
