Blazon: A Barbican Sable each tower charged with three chequy bands Sable/Argent superimposed on a Portcullis Azure

Link: The barbican depicts that on the Sandwich Toll Bridge over the River Stour. The barbican is an ancient bastion and in the Middle Ages formed part of the Sandwich town defences. The portcullis is symbolic of the protection given by the station.

History: Became operational as GCI station on 15 June 1943 (building having started in April 1942). Closed on 1 October 1958 and disposed of on 22 March 1965. Site was re-acquired by RAF for the development of IUKADGE (Improved UK Air Defence Ground Environment) in 1980 and finally became operational as RAF Ash on 6 January 1986. Finally closed in 1995 (no date recorded – AHB/RAF)
